Teaching Tomorrow’s Ag Leaders: Boone Central FFA Adds AI Cattle Model to the Classroom

The Boone Central FFA Chapter has recently added a new tool to its agricultural education program to better prepare students for experiences on their family farms and ranches—and for future careers.

With support from the Nebraska FFA Foundation, Boone Central FFA purchased a bovine artificial insemination model and accompanying curriculum for use in its animal science and veterinary science classes. The life-sized model includes a simulator with removable reproductive parts, an artificial insemination gun, corpus luteum development models, and fetal development models. The goal is to provide students with a free, hands-on introduction to cattle artificial insemination.

Abby Hitchler, the Boone Central FFA advisor, said student interest in artificial insemination has always been high, especially in learning how to perform the procedure successfully. It’s also an expensive skill to learn, with most AI schools costing more than $1,000 and limiting enrollment to those 18 or older. Factoring in the cost of practicing on live animals, this model offers an affordable, effective learning option, Hitchler says.

The hands-on model has boosted engagement among Boone Central FFA members, with many excited to try it. Instead of viewing images or reading from a book, they can now connect their learning directly to a tactile experience. Several students noted how challenging the procedure is, but also how fascinating it is to complete.

Beyond classroom learning, the model is helping students explore potential careers. Hitchler explained that many students in the area are involved in production agriculture, including raising cattle or club calves. Most of these operations already use artificial insemination. With early experience in the practice, students are more likely to pursue certification, preparing them to support their family operations or offer services to others in the area.

Looking ahead, the Boone Central FFA Chapter hopes to continue creating meaningful career connections by offering students opportunities to grow as individuals and professionals. “Our world and the field of agriculture are constantly changing,” Hitchler says. “I hope that we are able to prepare students to be positive, contributing members in this world.”

The Nebraska FFA Foundation is proud to support hands-on learning and career exploration through grants like the one awarded to Boone Central FFA, sponsored by Farmers Mutual of Nebraska.
